A Journey of Discovery
Welcome to the Archive, where you can shop the best of Banana Republic vintage from the’8Os,’9Os and’OOs including limited-edition curated drops, and discover iconic catalogs and ephemera that trace our adventures back to 1978.
Where It All Began
Journalist and illustrator Mel and Patricia Ziegler met while working at The San Francisco Chronicle. Inspired by a vintage utility jacket picked up on a trip to Australia, they founded the first Banana Republic store in Mill Valley in 1978 as a travel outfitter, offering quality surplus and upcycled garments. Their mail order catalog quickly became a collectors item, featuring product reviews by writers such as Nora Ephron and Hunter S. Thompson, paired with hand-drawn illustrations, reading lists, and travel dispatches.
Future Heirlooms
Leather and suede, utility details, classic khaki, premium knitwear一the best of our past continues to inspire our future. As does our home state of California, from San Francisco’s vertiginous streets to the foggy wharves and rugged coastlines of the greater Bay Area.
For our first drop of curated vintage, we tapped Marcus Allen, founder of The Society Archive – experts in one-ofa-kind vintage. From original logo tees to safari jackets, Allen dug deep to source some of our best pieces from the’8Os,’9Os, and ‘OOs.
